The Swinging 60's

Hey guys, so I'm not sure if I've said before but as one of my GCSE subjects I've chosen art, and now that i'm in year 10 the course work has already begun. For my first topic I have (not surprisingly) chosen to base it on fashion - the 1960's to be precise.

The 'swinging 60's' is one of my all time favourite era's of fashion. The bright colours, 'flower power', coats and mini skirts. I also love the versatility of the 60's, how much it ranged from the early sixties through to the late sixties, from sophisticated and casual to bright colours and bold prints. Who doesn't love it the 60's!?

During the early 60s, women's fashion followed the trends worn by the iconic Jackie Kennedy. Women everywhere wanted to copy her classy, yet fashionable look. Known for her Pill box hats, Suits in pastel colours, Short boxy-style jackets, Shift dresses, Oversized sunglasses and Pearls.

My art teacher suggested I looked at Mary Quant, who I remembered I had seen some of her pieces at the V&A museum (which I did a post on at the start of the year). I fell deeply in love with pretty much all of her collections, from her bright colours and mini skirts to her monochrome prints.

Twiggy (Lesley Hornby) was named "The Face of '66" by the Daily Express. In the mid 60's at 16 years of age, Twiggy became internationally known as the world's first supermodel.

And we cannot forget maybe the most iconic movie of all time… "breakfast at tiffany's".

Staring Audrey Hepburn, yet another fashion icon throughout the sixties.

Overall, I would say that the 60's were maybe the most important years of fashion. I mean, where would we be today without mini skirts? haha.

Kisses,
Maija Lily Xx
